Apple has been making some exciting updates to their iPad device management options. The most recent announcement removes the need to use the Volume Purchase Program (VPP) for app and book purchases. Instead, these features have been rolled into Apple School Manager.
Within Apple School Manager, you can:
• Browse and purchase apps and books directly within Apple School Manager
• Share licenses with other purchasers in the same location
• Transfer licenses from one location to another location
And just like with VPP, you still receive volume discounts of 50% off quantities of 20 or more for app purchases.
Although migrating to the new system is not required, you may want to consider this approach if you are managing multiple VPP tokens. Under the current VPP system, each token is its own unique identity, and licenses purchased with one token are non-transferrable. By using Apple School Manager, you can now transfer licenses between locations. This allows you to better control purchasing and budget codes while still flexing the freedom needed to move apps between devices, such as when students transfer schools.
Before deciding about migrating, please consult your Apple Systems Engineer to discuss the best solution for your district.
